postage price increase

hi folks!  i just wanted to keep you update with news about postage prices (exciting, i know, but sadly necessary!).  as of 1st July 2020, unfortunately postage prices are going to be increased across the board. it’s not great news, which is why i wanted to give you time to place any orders you want before the price jump.

the US government has recently won the right to set their own prices in the global postage network; this unfortunately means that they have massively increased what they charge Royal Mail for “last mile” delivery (the final leg of the parcel’s journey within the USA).  in addition, there are currently far less passenger flights between countries due to COVID-19, which also increases the cost of sending international parcels.

with the postage system overloaded, a lot of parcels are being hugely delayed, or going missing altogether.  i had initially tried to offset this by setting cheaper flat rates for all parcels, and offering a free second class postage option within the UK; however i can’t sustain this indefinitely as it is costing me a fair bit of money!  so as of 1st July 2020, i’ll be setting all postage prices differently.

all parcels will all now be sent using a Royal Mail tracked service – even though all services are still subject to delay at the moment, this will provide both myself and the customer with more peace of mind.  for UK parcels, this service won’t provide full tracking during its journey but will provide confirmation of delivery (i need to send a minimum of 1000 UK parcels per year to access a fully tracked service and at the moment i don’t qualify).  for international services, the parcel will be able to be tracked throughout its journey.  both options will also have a higher insurance level should it go missing.

UK parcels will be sent using Royal Mail Tracked 48; this will cost you a flat rate of £4.50 regardless of order size and should arrive within two days.  i’ll be using this service starting immediately; the price will stay at the cost of first class post (£3.50) until the end of june, then increased to the tracked price of £4.50.  the free second class option will be removed as of monday 8th june.

International parcels (non-USA) will be sent using Royal Mail International Tracked; this will cost you a flat rate of £10.00 regardless of order size.  there is currently no guaranteed delivery time frame, but the parcel will be fully trackable throughout its journey.  this will be the only postage option offered for non-UK/non-USA orders as of 1st july.

USA parcels will be also be sent using Royal Mail International Tracked; this will cost you a flat rate of £15.00 regardless of order size.  again, there is currently no guaranteed delivery time frame, but the parcel will be fully trackable throughout its journey.  this will be the only postage option offered for USA orders as of 1st july.

i know this is quite a jump, and it’s not something that i’m happy about.  i hope that by giving you lots of warning you can place orders ahead of time if the new postage options are too much for you.  i do feel like i need to point out that with these flat rates, i’m still going to be charging you less than i will pay in postage for everything except for single-skein orders; i’m trying my best to absorb a bit of the cost for you so that i can keep sending my yarn across the world, but i’m not in a financial position where i can afford to cushion the blow much more than i already am. i am definitely not profiting in any way from the higher postage prices!!

i’m really sorry to have to increase the prices to this level; i’ve tried to think of a better way to do it but haven’t come up with anything yet.  it’s possible that as more commercial airlines start flying again, the international prices may come down slightly; i’ll be keeping an eye on Royal Mail’s updates and will do what i can if that happens.  with the current shipping situation, i’m hoping that sending all orders via a tracked service will give us all a bit more peace of mind, and also protect both myself and you if anything does go missing.

these price changes will take effect at the start of july (the free UK second class option will end in a week) so if you need to place an order at the old postage rates now’s your chance!
